This was a blog from a friend of mind, I think it was written in September. Thought some of you might like it.
Why I’m Supporting Obama (For Now)...
...He's actually out there telling potential supporters truths that they may not want to hear. It's probably not a great way to get elected, but consider the following:
-He criticized the auto industry while addressing a group of city leaders in Detroit.
-At a speech in front of the NEA he supported merit pay for teacher and said there were some good things about the much-hated No Child Left Behind act.
-He told a group of supporters that there really isn't a short-term solution to high gas prices and anyone who says there is is lying. The problem is, we simply consume too much gas.
-At a time he was actively courting Jewish support he said that when it comes to Israel's problems, "no one is suffering more than the Palestinians."
-When addressing black audiences, he regularly criticizes irresponsibility in that communty, once saying that black men should realize that responsibility for a child doesn't stop at conception.
And these are the Democratic party's base voters. As GQ put it: "Obama revels in moments like these, when he has the chance to turn down an easy pander and tell a hard truth."
If you believe in the stereotype of Hillary as a pandering triangulator, then Obama is seeming like the anti-Hillary. The problem is, his campaign has been MIA lately (and his wife needs to STFU).
Hillary wouldn't be a bad president. She's smart and capable, but her defense of lobbyists and claim that their money doesn't influence her is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in this campaign (and that includes everything that Mike Gravel has said). Obama is no angel himself, but his own comment on the influence of money was that "we're all swimming in the same sewer. The difference is that I want to clean it up" (or words to that effect).
