I was in the June Walk 4 or 5 times in the 70s. It was a big deal with the kids from St Barnabas, sometimes we would have over 100 kids participate. My mother led the Barnabas effort at least twice, and always helped out.

What was the June Walk?

Post June walk
The June walk was a parade for the children of Woodlawn to celebrate the end of school (I think). The groups were organized by school (St Barnabas, St Mark, PS19) and each year there was a theme. I remember 1976 was US history and I was George Washington. I think my blue velvet coat still hangs in my dad's attic (32 years later)!

The parade started at PS19 and went up Katonah Ave, making a left onto VCPE and ending near the tennis corts at Indian Field.

There were many prizes and awards for costumes and floats each year, and a big party was usually held at the end. Snacks and drinks were provided and Irish Dancing was the entertainment.

I think it went on until at least 1980, when I graduated.

I remember the June Walk!  I marched in a few of them in the 70's.  Wow, I can't believe someone brought this up.

Yes, I remember the June Walk!  Each year there was a theme and kids would dress up in costume to go along with the theme.  Each school would make a "float" and if you were handy enough, you would get together with other kids and make your own float for the parade.  One year my friends dressed us "Josie and the *****" and won for best costume. It started at the corner of 237th and Katonah.  There would be ice cream cups, hot dogs and soda for the kids at the field -   They would give out prizes for the best float and best costume.  It was a big thing when I was a kid back in the 60's/70's.

I also remember the "chog and grog."  Is this when they would have a race and you had to go to each bar and have a glass of beer and whoever made it to the finish line (last bar on McLean) won?  Many people never made it past McGinn's!  I think the money raised was donated - I think to buy turkeys for needy families for Thanksgiving though I may be mixing it up with another community event.
