Post unusable unit intended
n late 2007 the FBI announced that it had obtained a partial DNA profile of Cooper from the tie he left on the hijacked plane,[42] and made public a significant amount of previously-unreleased evidence.[85] This included Cooper's 1971 plane ticket from Portland to Seattle (price: $18.52 plus tax, total $20.00, paid in cash), and the information that one of the two reserve parachutes obtained in haste from the Seattle skydiving school and inadvertently supplied to Cooper was a "dummy" – an unusable unit intended for classroom demonstrations. A ripcord was present, but inoperative. Though it had markings identifying it to any experienced skydiver as a dummy,[86] Cooper selected it for his jump, apparently unaware that it was not functional. (He cannibalized the other, functional reserve parachute, probably using its shrouds to secure the money bag to his body.[85]) They also disclosed that Cooper chose the older of the two primary parachutes over a technically superior professional sport parachute.[42]

The agency also posted previously unreleased composite sketches and fact sheets, along with a request to the general public for information which might lead to Cooper's positive identification.[39][42][87]
